PAUL von HINDENBURG
Because of the war, he tells the Governor of Thorn he cannot make plans for his visit.
TLS: "von Hindenburg" as General Field Marshal, 1p, 8x11¼. Headquarters, 1916 March 20. In German, with rough English translation. To the Royal Lieutenant-General and Governor of Thorn, Mr. von Dickhuth-Harrach, Thorn. In full: "In reply to Your Excellency's letter of March 18, 1916, I would kindly beg Your Excellency to refrain from your intended visit since, in view of the current war situation, I cannot with certainty plan my time or my whereabouts at the moment. I would, however, be glad to receive at any time any written requests Your Excellency may have. With deepest respect and soldierly greetings." Lieutenant General von DICKHUTH-HARRACH was Commanding Officer of an Army Corps that carried his name during the siege of Nowo Georgiesk in 1915. The Corps was made up of the 143th Infantry Brigade and the greater part of the Heavy Artillery, which was later put under the command of Colonel von Berendt. Thorn, Germany is today the city of Torun, Poland. Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934) fought in the Prussian-Austrian War (1866) and the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). In 1911, after having commanded an army corps, the 64-year-old soldier retired from active service. Shortly after World War I broke out in 1914, Hindenburg was given the command of an army in East Prussia. After the victory of Tannenberg over the Russians in August 1914, he became a national hero. He was hailed as a brilliant strategist, a great General and a leader of men. After the Tannenberg victory, Kaiser Wilhelm II honored Hindenburg, raising his rank to Colonel General and Field Marshal. Now 72, he retired again in 1919. He was 77 when he was asked to run for President of the Republic of Germany. Hindenburg won and served from May 12, 1925 until his death on August 2, 1934. He had appointed Hitler Chancellor in 1933. After Hindenburg died, Hitler combined the offices of Chancellor and President to become Führer. Folds. Vertical fold touches "n" in von. Creased.
