| Lot # 577 DARYL F. GATES - SIGNATURE(S) 11/1994 - Document 269178 |
|
|
DARYL GATES. Signature: "Best wishes/from the/'Chief'/Daryl F.
Gates/11-94", 5x3 card (3¾x2¾ visible), matted with a magazine photo of
Gates (color, 3x5) to an overall size of of 8x10. As an Inspector with the Los
Angeles Police Department, Gates is credited with innovative police methods
which became national models: SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) teams and the
DARE drug education program. As Chief of the LAPD (1978-1992), Gates
was an active crime fighter and a "cops' cop", strongly defending his officers.
His reign was controversial, however, due to Gates' own outspoken
comments - he once called casual marijuana use "treason" - and charges that the
LAPD was insensitive to minority communities. His "Operation Hammer", begun in
1988 to target gang violence, was criticized for profiling minorities. He was
obliged to resign in the aftermath of the Rodney King beating by LA police,
caught on videotape in 1991, and the ensuing riots. Not matted in the Gallery of
History style. Fine condition.
