Document 100433 CHARLES E. DURYEA Co-founder of America's first automobile manufacturing firm. Picture Postcard signed: "Chas E. Duryea" on verso, 5½x3½. Three color photographs, including one of Duryea captioned: "Charles E. Duryea/in/World's First/Real Automobile/Had All Present Day/Essentials". The inventor has signed beneath a 12-line history of the Duryea Motor Wagon Co. The firm, co-founded by Charles E. Duryea and his brother Frank in September 1895, was the first U.S. corporation for the manufacture of gasoline powered automobiles. From the caption: "The Duryea Motor Wagon Co. of Springfield [Massachusetts] was first U.S. motor car corp. Sept. 21, 1895. Duryea Cars won America's first auto race, Chicago Nov. 28, 1895...#540648 granted to Charles E. Duryea June 11, 1895 antedated the first patents of all other U.S. automobile makers...."
